The journey

It's well signed from the centre of Phnom Penh - follow the signs from Wat Phnom to route 6 over the bridge. Traffic was fairly busy out of the city but the sprawl ended very quickly. The road quietened down after 10km. Good surface with a very few cracks in the top layer of seal. No hard shoulder at first and no road markings until Kampong Cham province. It was an interesting ride past brick works, lush scenery and attractive towns and villages. Shady most of the way with a light southerly wind. There were many guesthouses and restaurants on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, then fruit sellers, regular roadside cafés and some towns with markets. 5km before Skuon there's a rash of large roadside canteens and restaurants which are worth stopping at for lunch, as there's not much choice in Skuon. There's a cluster of guesthouses in Skuon on the Siem Reap exit of the main junction. Some are nicer than others; some charge by the hour. It's a very small town with nothing to do except oggle the deep-fried spider sellers.

The room

Taing Kheang Ngoun
$5 for twin room with fan, bathroom with cold water.
Basic but clean. Restaurant downstairs with English menu (the same menu as the restaurant across the road). Noisy neighbours at night. Dodgy power supply.
