The journey

A good ride through picturesque villages and diverting scenery. The road surface was good except for a very short stretch 20km before Kampong Thom. There wasn't a sealed hard shoulder but traffic was generally quiet except for a few cars and buses which zoomed past at high speed. Plenty of places to get drinks and some roadside café stops and towns. Light southerly/south-easterly wind all day and light headwind for the last 20km. There was a guesthouse in Sou Young.

We made a detour to wat Phnum Santuk (signed from the road). It's 2km along a dirt track which has very thick sand in places. Entry was $1. We risked leaving our paniers locked onto the bikes and took important documents with us. It's 810 steps to the top.

There were several hotels, guesthouses and a couple of smart(ish) restaurants in Kampong Thom. The internet café over the bridge gave us free biscuits and glasses of water.
