The journey

It's 7km along sealed road to the junction with the white horse then 17km into Kampot. The seal on the Kep road was old but it got better on the road to Kampot. Traffic was quite busy, probably due to Chinese New Year. There were several guesthouses in Kampot.

The Orchid has an excellent 4WD but their tour was full so the owner booked us an alternative tour. In retrospect, it would have been better to book ahead and pay more for a seat on the Orchid tour. We were picked up from our guesthouse after 8.30am. Cost was $10 including a vegetable curry lunch and water. $5 park admission not included. The journey to Bokor was an extremely bumpy and uncomfortable ride in the back of a pick-up. After lunch we didn't have much time at the palace because we did a 30 minute "trek". Our van broke down so we had to wait a long time at the top and didn't get back till after dark. It would be difficult to organise a trip on your own and it's 40km uphill on an awful road so cycling is not an option (although we met some hard-core cyclists who had done it). You can overnight at the ranger station.

Restaurant on site. Guesthouse organises tours to Bokor leaving at 8am if there are enough people; they own an excellent 4WD vehicle. Owner is very helpful - he let us use his mobile phone to make a call and booked an alternative tour when his was full.
