The journey

Very scenic ride on the whole; flat except for the last km to the guesthouse. The only bad surface was on the Kep road.

The bridges out of Takeo were being rebuilt. Route 22 linking up to route 3 had very old seal making it bumpy and difficult to ride. The dirt at the side of the road was easier to ride on. There were towns selling snacks every 20km with drink stops in between. Route 3 had a better seal. After 6km the road forked - we took the left road to Tani and Kep. There are no signs and only occasional markers (although the km markers did at least have the route number on). There was hardly any traffic at all on route 31 via Tani and Kampang Trach. The wat at Tani has an old tower with a tree growing out of it.

There were a couple of guesthouses and restaurants in Kampang Trach with English menus - follow the signs from the main road down a dirt side road. After Kampang Trach there was an east/south-easterly headwind. A few km before the Kep turning, the road narrowed and the seal became worse. At the turning was a cluster of snack stalls. The Kep road was dirt for 5km then old seal into town. It's another 5km to the centre of Kep-sur-Mer, then 1km to the guesthouses up the hill. We arrived during Chinese New Year so the beach and guesthouses were chockablock; we took the last room at Le bout du monde.

Just up the hill from Veranda (which is extremely nice and starts at $20 for a double room)
$10 for a bungalow with double bed, bathroom with cold water, mosquito net, basic breakfast, deck looking out over sea with hammock and chairs.
Restaurant on site with reasonable food, but Mat got sick and they served us ant tea at breakfast.
