The journey
This was a very good ride despite our tired legs from the previous day. We took baguettes and fruit with us this time, and there were no food stalls until Phoukoun. The road is rolling along a ridge then downhill for about 10km. We followed a very pretty river along a valley then cycled about 10km uphill to Phoukoun where there were restaurants, a market and a guesthouse. It was then rolling along a ridge and downhill again for about15km. The scenery was again spectacular. The final 2-3km is uphill to the resort, just beyond Nam Ken village. We met several touring cyclists on the road. Just before we reached Phoukoun we were offered a lift to Vang Vieng by a minibus, which we declined - presumably it would have cost us and wasn't just a generous offer.
Order the chicken schnitzel at the restaurant opposite the hot springs. A pair of cyclists we met in Kiu Kacham went into the kitchen to demonstrate how it's made after they ordered it and were given just a plate of bread and chips!
