The journey
The road follows the Mekong and is pretty much flat and uninteresting. There are small, sparsely populated villages along the way. Thabok (also known as Thapabat) has two guesthouses. We had a headwind from Pakhoay. The traffic was light and the biggest problem was from vehicles coming the other direction which allowed so much space when they overtook that we had to pull over.Pakxan is small but spread out. It has a bus station, a market and a number of guest houses/hotels. There's no internet in town (they laughed when we asked).
The room
Hongxaykham hotelK30,000 for double room, bathroom with hot water, fan.
The hotel filled up with pick-up drivers at night; Amanda and Richard said they had bed-bugs, but we found it to be fine.
