The journey
A flat ride out of Vang Vieng then rolling around the lake. There are food stalls and a guesthouse at Hin Houp. After a small ascent there's a downhill into a plain. A few guesthouses are scattered along the road to Phonhong with more on the way to Thalat. Just before Thinkeo the route turns right across a bridge, past a guesthouse and restaurants on the far river bank. At the junction where Laos Zoo is signed right, go straight ahead then over a very steep little hill for another 4km to reach Longngum view resort.It's possible to hire a boat from Tha Heua to the resort costing around $30 for a boat with space for at least 3 bikes. Mr Ley was recommended by Robert at Tiger Trails, but he's very busy so book in advance: 020 5623954.
The room
Longngum view resort$8 for a basic double room, bathroom (cold water), TV (BBC World but bad reception).
$15 for a very good room.
Excellent views across the lake; limited meals available. Restaurant with more choice in the little town. We were allowed to refill our water bottles for free.
