The journey
We took the Greenline VIP coach which cost B260 per person including the bike. It was OTT for a three hour journey: reclining seats plus drinks and snacks and a movie. It would have been B180 for air-con and less for the ordinary bus, but we didn't find out if bikes could be taken on those coaches. The front wheels had to come off to load the bikes in the luggage compartment under the coach. The road from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai was in good condition but very hilly. There are many guesthouses in Chiang Rai, a good night market and several multinational restaurants. There's also a local cycling group.
