The ride

The road was being upgraded to dual carriageway; much was unsealed, muddy and made for very poor cycling. It's straight with few shelters or food and drink stalls and lots of coaches. Afterwards, Ronny at Ban Thai suggested an alternative route on the 1293 to the south - it's longer but more scenic.

There are lots of guesthouses in Sukhothai. Bikes are ideal for exploring the historic park and Ronny knows a scenic off-road route to get there. It's worth taking a day off to explore the park. Our bikes were cleaned really well by the guesthouse staff after their ordeal on the road from Phitsanulok. Ronny suggested a dollar but we paid B300.
