Overview
After the road from Siem Reap to Poipet, you'll be overwhelmed by how developed Thailand is: tarmac! wide lanes with hard shoulders! plentiful snack stops with chilled drinks! There are a number of national parks in this area so it's a popular getaway from Bangkok, which means weekends can be busy. It's also prime mountain biking territory. Many of the towns to the south of Khao Yai have good bike shops and we saw several lycra-clad Thais on their bikes. The hills into Khao Yai are challenging, but it's worth the climb for the fantastic scenery and wildlife - monkeys, elephants, porcupines and even tigers if you're lucky (or unlucky). The only problem is that there aren't many cheap places to stay close to the south entrance to the park.
