The journey
A fairly strong north/north-easterly wind was blowing so it was quite an easy ride. Out of Hoi An towards SH1 the road goes under the highway and curves north. It's not obvious how to get onto the highway so we took a short dirt track between paddy fields that led up to the main road. SH1 has a good surface and a hard shoulder for bicycles/scooters but only wide enough for one. Sometimes the dirt and gravel encroach onto the hard shoulder. The traffic was patchy as before, but not too heavy and no busier than Thai roads. The problem is that it's only two lanes and the hard shoulder is narrower. There were no shelters along the route except cafés, but there are many large petrol stations with covered forecourts and toilets (basic but free). We had lunch in a churchyard at the far end of Tam Ky, just before the river.
SH1 bypasses Quang Ngai. The turn off goes through Son Tinh first before crossing the river to Quang Ngai.
