The journey
Strong northerly/north-easterly all day. Rain in the night but it was dry by morning and the clouds cleared by mid-morning. The ride was fairly flat with some undulation. Guesthouses are dotted every 20km along the road to Phu My. There are some nice chams en route.Mat broke a spoke, again on the rear wheel under the gear cassette. We stopped at a bike shop on Hung Dao street in Quy Nhon and were taken to a wheel repairer down a side street. He made the tool to remove the gear cassette, replaced the spoke with one of our spares and trued the wheel in an hour for Ð30,000. His workshop is on the first side street after the cathedral as you ride into town.
Apparently the wind only blows north to south for 3 months of the year, usually October to December. By March, it starts blowing south to north again.
The room
Barbara's backpackers18, Nguyen Hue Street, Quy Nhon
Tel: 056 892-921
$8 for double room, bathroom with hot water, mosquito net, balcony and sea views.
Bit noisy because of ventilation holes in the wall. Western menu, home-made cakes and mugs of tea. Very friendly Kiwi owner with lots of local information and a good route out of town.
