The journey

This was a fantastic ride. We took route 60 to Mo Cay then route 57 to Cho Lac then Vinh Long where we joined the 1A to Can Tho. Other routes are possible but this was well signed and sealed all the way except for a couple of km. We passed through several villages; food and drink were readily available throughout the day including lots of chay restaurants. There was a fairly strong easterly and the sun was very hot.

The My Tho ferry was Ð1500 per person + bike. 10km from the other side to Ben Tre, where the ferry was Ð1000 each. Signage was good once you got off the ferry. At Mo Cay the turning to route 57 was immediately before the bridge. It was unsealed for a couple of km. We rode past pretty churches and gorgeous lush countryside. There were occasional trucks but the other traffic is light and mainly made up of scooters and bicycles. There were a few unsealed bridges and many rickety wooden bridges covered with metal plates. The ferry to Vinh Long was Ð1000 each, then there are clear signs to Can Tho although we had to ask at the next junction. QL1A had steady traffic but less than the road coming out of HCMC. There's a hard shoulder but the road surface was old and rough in places. It was 30km to Can Tho, ending at another ferry (Ð1000 each). From the ferry, go straight ahead to the main junction with the bus station on the corner and turn left. Go straight ahead till you get to the waterfront. There are many hotels and guesthouses.

Friendly and smart, but karaoke bar nearby and the door didn't lock 100%. Owner arranged floating market tour for us after a friendly but hard sell.
